Keeping Your Calm During Major Life Changes

Contributing post

It is almost impossible to feel the impact of stress sometimes, and there are a few things in life that tend to kick stress up a notch. Getting married, having children, divorces, and moving all rank profoundly. While there are days of excitement too, but relocating to a new home is a lot of work.

There are a few ways that you can cut down on your stress levels over this period.

Accept It

Fighting your stress, or pretending that it doesn’t exist is not advisable. Like all feelings, sometimes you need to accept them as part of the situation and move forward. Acceptance is a really powerful tool, and it can be used here to significant effect. Acknowledge the stress is there but don’t let it put you off.

Time

The one thing many people misjudge is the amount of time you have to get something finished. Packing is one of them. This is even truer if you are also hoping to sell some of your belongings before you go. Giving yourself at least an extra week on top of each task will mean you have plenty of time to relax in between jobs.

Small

“The man who moves mountains begins by carrying away small stones.” And that is going to be you. Tackle small things each day, and before long, you will have managed to get much more done than you had initially thought. If you feel overwhelmed, then doing anything, is better than doing nothing. Writing sticky notes, throwing things out, making some sales - all add up.

Organized

The key to a low-stress move is knowing where everything is, where things are going and  when the movers you booked via mybekins.com are going to turn up. Labelling boxes early on, making sure once a box is packed it is taped shut and moved to a ‘ready’ pile is going to help a lot. You should also use a smaller box that you can keep important documents in. That way, you won’t start worrying that you have packed away the passports and the insurance documents for the car.

Ask For Help

Even if you are a one-person army, you are still going to need help from time to time. If you have friends and family that are willing to help then ask them. Extra sets of hands can make packing a lot more fun too. You can throw on some music, and use dancing and singing as a way to release any tension you’re holding on to.

Sleep

With a big mix of emotions happening, it can be harder to sleep, but it is essential that you try to manage that. Listening to calming music, or sleep stories from mobile phone apps like Headspace or Calm can help you drift off and relax you. It also helps if you have a calming cup of mint or peppermint tea before you want to head to bed. And, always remember to mentally make a note of what you are grateful for that day.
