If you are having a hard time finding the motivation to get running or if you know that you want to get fitter, you just don’t know how or where to start, then this is the guide for you. Running can be daunting, especially when you are not used to doing it, or when you feel a little uncomfortable with yourself. This guide will help you to gain the confidence you need, while also making sure that you are going to get the most out of every mile you do.

Strengthen your Body

Try and Run Up More Hills

One of the best things about running up hills is that they work on dynamic power and even hip strength too. You need to drive those hips in order to get up the hill, and this will build your strength way more overall. If you are having a hard time running up hills, then start out small and build yourself up. If you don’t run up hills because they are just far too difficult then this won’t be helping you in the long-run and you may even find that you end up never achieving your full potential. Having some waterproof shoes will help here as well because there’s nothing worse than trying to run uphill in shoes that are soaked through because of the rain.

Don’t Try and Set a Personal Record

It’s so important that you are process-oriented rather than outcome-oriented. You need to try and get a bit better with each run that you do. Train a little harder, squat a little lower and try not to obsess about beating records early-on. If you do, then you may find that you end up struggling overall and that you also find it very difficult to maintain a high level of motivation.

Hydrate when you Attend Events

A lot of trail races  or running events don’t come with any kind of water station at all. You have to make sure that you do everything you can to hydrate yourself well in advance if possible so that you don’t end up compromising your health. Of course, depending on the distance of the race, make sure that you take a bottle of water with you to the event as well so you can make sure that you are not going to be thirsty. If you do this, then you should be able to make the most out of your race and you should also be able to keep running for longer periods of time as well.

Good runners will always condition their entire body. The main reason for this is because the arms drive the legs. It’s vital that you keep your upper body and your core toned by doing lots of push-ups, back raises, sit-ups and more. Never forget that the back is part of your core, and always stay away from machine weights. Pilates, climbing and other dynamic flexibility exercises will work in your favour here when it comes to running, so it is imperative that you keep that in mind.
