Fitness Files: Lisa Odenweller
I was introduced to Lisa Odenweller and her company beaming after testing out one of their three-day food cleanses over the summer. Odenweller is a strong believer in crafting a healthy well-being and wanted to share her passion for this lifestyle with others through her company beaming. I was captured not only by the high quality products offered on her companies site but also by the mission to educate others to make smart food choices. If are looking for a bit of inspiration continue reading my Fitness Files interview with Lisa.
NMF: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority?
Lisa Odenweller (LO): Exercise has been a priority for me for as long as I can remember. Even as young as 11 / 12I can remember going for runs around the neighborhood and even younger than that I would come home from school and either play soccer in the backyard, tennis against the garage or jump rope in the driveway for hours (I was even the state champ for jump roping in 3-5th grade - LOL). Kinda weird like that. Kidding aside, I always knew how good I felt from exercise both mentally and physically and still make this a daily commitment even if its just a power walk. I love to listen to Ted talks or other educational content while I powerwalk as it is often my most creative time when my best ideas come alive.
NMF: What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?
LO: Almost every day I have a green juice made of mostly greens and little to no fruit (Beaming's Pure Green juice with no fruit and Elevate, a fennel green juice with coconut water are my two favorites) as well as our Vitality Shot with turmeric, lemon and ginger are my every day staples. After a workout, I almost always have a home-made version of Lisa's Lean and Green which is an avocado based smoothie with no fruit and loaded with plant protein and superfood greens. I tend to stay away from fruit as much as I do love it because I try to be as low glycemic as possible (and save my "sugar" for a glass of wine at night :)
NMF: At Nadia Murdock Fit our motto is “Train Your Mind, Change Your Body” so we must ask: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?
LO: Love this question and its simple for me - I know how good I feel when I exercise and choose to exercise as much for my body if not more for my mind. I sleep better, focus better, have more energy and most importantly, it is what keeps me happy. The positive endorphins of exercise are, to me, the greatest reward which makes it "easy" to stay committed.
NMF: How do you change your body? What are your fitness favorites?
LO: As we know, its calories in / calories out so food is the biggest influencer on changing your body. We have to be very conscious of what we eat and aware of whats working and not working so that we can adapt as our bodies change. Foods that may be working for us can, over time, start working against us, requiring us to modify as we can build up allergies or resistance to foods when we eat them too often.
As I get older, it has become harder to make significant changes in my body, however, that doesn't keep me from being active every day. I am always conscious of what I eat and try to eat clean 90% of the time with a mostly plant based diet supplementing with organic, hormone free lean protein here and there. I love food (and wine) so I definitely splurge every once in awhile and do my best to stay away from bread, carbs and cheese even though I love it. For fitness, I do lots of different activities from running to boot camps to running stairs to spin class to yoga, yoga sculpt, power walking and dance. Every day my routine is different although I tend to prefer anything outside and especially any activity on the beach.
