NMF: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority?

KD: I have always been drawn to movement and dance.  I started ballet when I was 8 yrs. old, started professionally at 18 and danced until my son was born at 32. I have always taught some form of fitness as an alternative source of income and as a way to stay on top of my game.  As part of my master’s thesis for dance/movement therapy I assimilated my dance, fitness, and therapy perspectives into a Body/Mind model as an alternative to the “No Pain, No Gain”, “Go for the Burn” attitude often seen in the 80’s.  All of my products have evolved from this sensibility of making friends with our bodies, listening and moving in ways that create pleasure, strength of being, and connection to oneself and others.

NMF: What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?

KD: I eat nuts, and dried fruit when I need an in between snack.  I mix my own favorite nuts with dried cranberries, or cherries and have a container near my desk and in my car for quick pick-me ups. I also drink high quality antioxidant rich alkaline water from a water ionizer that purifies and ionizes the tap water.  It goes down smooth and motivates me to drink more.

NMF: At Nadia Murdock Fit our motto is “Train Your Mind, Change Your Body” so we must ask: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?

KD: I meditate first thing in the morning, with my coffee of course, on all that I am grateful for and then sit still to listen. I walk my dog in nature every day and listen for what comes through by way of thought or image or feeling.  In the “do” mode I am either reading a good novel, playing scrabble on words with friends, or learning something new that requires concentration. I try to get up from my desk and move or roll on the floor or throw the ball for my dog every hour.

NMF: How do you change your body?  What are your fitness favorites?

KD: I love Yoga and Pilates, and have created my own work-out props, especially those that are elastic and enveloping. Like the Stretch-eze and the Airwalker. I have adapted the use of the resistance and support of Stretch-eze for all of the Pilates mat work and for some favorite Yoga stretches.  It’s a phenomenal way to access the deepercore muscle while relaxing the neck, shoulders, and hip flexors.  I end up feeling strong, grounded, light, free and energized. This is especially useful for my love of West Coast Swing, my favorite partner dance.  Still dancing after all of these years!
