Fitness Files: Yoga Warrior 365

Rudy Mettia is an Ex-marine. Ex-bartender. Ex-personal trainer. Ex-nightclub bouncer. Ex-Cop. So what is Rudy up to now?  He is a yoga instructor, creator of a top-selling DVD Program, Yoga Warrior 365, and a round-the-clock motivator.  He teaches sold out classes in Santa Monica, California on a weekly basis, and is the private yoga instructor to critically acclaimed author and thinker, Arianna Huffington.

So when you step onto your mat, whether you are in front of one of his DVDs or experiencing his charm in the flesh, be prepared to strip down the perceived limitations you have set for yourself. You will get emotionally naked. Think of it as yoga meets therapy, wrapped together into one pretty package, minus the exorbitant price tag. Continue reading my Fitness Files interview with Rudy Mettia to see what makes him the motivator he is today.

NMF: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority?

YW: Fitness has been a priority for my entire life actually. In my younger years my family life was unstable and in an effort to feel some sense of control or stability I turned towards my own personal health and fitness. At that time it was a place I could turn to and draw strength from, emotionally speaking. It was my saving grace. It has been my well spring that everything else in my life flows from.

NMF: What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?

YW: Trying to keep on the straight and narrow can be a challenge, as we all know. I like low calorie high protein shakes between meals. I try to not eat anything four hours before I go to sleep at night and and not until at least four hours after I wake up in the morning. I start each morning with a quark of hot water with the juice of two fresh lemons. This is great to cleanse and hydrate the body and get my system moving.

NMF: At Nadia Murdock Fit our motto is “Train Your Mind, Change Your Body” so we must ask: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?

YW: It's important to have a strong mind set so that we can achieve our physical goals. I treat each week as a sporting season. Everyday is a chance to win or loose. At the beginning of each week I have my work outs and yoga sessions planned. I take each day one at a time and my goal is to win each day. If I end my Monday and I've done everything I planned I am 1- 0. If I succeed again on Tuesday, I am 2-0. If on Wednesday I don't complete my sessions according to my plan, then I am 2-1. Treating each day individually not only sets me up for a success everyday of the week, but if I fall short on any day, then I look at tomorrow as a new day with the potential for to win.

NMF: How do you change your body?  What are your fitness favorites?

YW: To achieve change in my body I use consistently use three methods: high intensity interval training, strength training and Intermittent fasting.

HIIT or high intensity interval training. This method of interval training focuses on alternation periods of short intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods. This is great way to condition your body.

Strength training. Four days a week I strength training using weights and resistance.

Intermittent fasting. When I need to drop weight I use this method that I mentioned this earlier, lengthening the time that I don't eat each night. For anyone interested in learning more I recommend the information provided by Dr. Mercola. (link to http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2014/06/14/intermittent-fasting-longevity.aspx)

My fitness faves for cardio is the spin bike, for core conditioning is resistance training with cable and weights and for yoga is to have a well rounded consistent practice and to use this for recovery and healing on a deeper level.
