Sheldon McBee

By taking so many Les Mills workouts I have seen a serious difference and loving the results of my toned muscles.  I was introduced to Les Mills GRIT after working out with Master Trainer Sheldon McBee. Sheldon is an extremely seasoned fitness professional so naturally I had to interview him for my Fitness Files

Sheldon McBee is the North American Program Coach for LES MILLS GRIT® Series and a Les Mills International Master Trainer.  He brings 15 years of fitness experience to Les Mills, coupled with a stellar educational background; a Master’s degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Delaware and a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology from Albright College.

His emphasis on functional and high-intensity training laid the ground for his work as a global instructor. In that role Sheldon teaches workshops and advanced training for LES MILLS® instructors throughout the U.S., Russia, Slovenia, Brazil, Canada, New Zealand and Mexico. He leads the LES MILLS GRIT® team, where he applies his invaluable expertise to provide input for certification training and continuing educational content. NMF: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority?

SM: I was always into athletics since I was very young.  I played youth soccer, basketball, football, and baseball.  Although I was quite athletic I struggled with my weight.  I was always very heavy set and at one point was nearly 200 pounds at 12 years old.  The turning point came for me when I got into High School Football and was put on my first official training program.  I became quickly addicted to progressive results, getting “huge arms”, being stronger, and all the things a teenage boy dreamed about in the weight room. By the time I reached the college to play football, sport specific training was an essential part of my life that I never let go.

NMF: What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?

SO: I’m very much into Paleothic-like eating.  I eat plenty of eggs, steak, chicken, and fish.  I also eat a wide variety of fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and healthy oils.  My go-to mid-am snack is a whey and berry shake on the go.  It takes me less than a minute to whip it together.  2 cups of blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries with 2 scoops of whey and ice.  I blend it, throw it in my shake, and I’m good to go.  I also have the coolest Cuisinart egg cooker.  It hard boils up 8 eggs for me in just minutes with no mess.  An awesome and quick source of protein for me when I’m busy and need a quick fix.

NMF: At Nadia Murdock Fit our motto is “Train Your Mind, Change Your Body” so we must ask: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?

SO: Besides my subscription to luminosity and regular indulgence in the latest research articles to keep me sharp, I know what makes me tick.  I’m a regiment person.  If it’s in my calendar, on my task list, or set as a reminder I know it will get done.  It’s the same with what motivates me, mentally, to stay focused and on top of my health and fitness.  When it comes to training my mind I know what gets me going is when I am in control and there’s a plan.  I schedule every workout I do in my outlook calendar and mark in red so it stands out.  I prepare food as many days in advance as suits my work and travel schedule so things are in order.  I find this makes me comfortable, organized, committed, and prepared.

NMF: How do you change your body?  What are your fitness favorites?

SO: I’ve learned that defining change isn’t always physical change.  Quite often for me it’s what satisfies me physically and emotionally.  I like to go hard when I train.  Without a doubt High Intensity Functional and Interval Training are my favorites.  There’s something satisfying to me about knowing I gave it my absolute all in a workout.  It lets out the inner athlete that’s in me.  I get really fast physical results with less training time.  Some people who know me will know I really love dance cardio!  I teach LES MILLS SHBAM and LES MILLS BODYJAM (2 LES MILLS dance formats) every week and they are seriously the most fun 2 hours of exercise my entire week.
