Fitness Files: Michelle Brown

Michelle Brown has been involved in athletics as far back as she can remember. She always seemed to do well in many sports including softball, gymnastics, competitive cheerleading, long distance running, and tennis.  Due to her strong foundation of an active lifestyle, she continued to craft a fit and healthy life in adulthood. Michelle explored bodybuilding and participated in a Figure Competition in 2008.  After receiving second and third place trophies, Michelle decided to get certified as a Personal Trainer through NASM.  Transformation became her specialty, both physically and mentally, as she worked with and trained people of all ages and fitness levels. Now, at age 44, Michelle is still actively competing. Continue reading my interview with Michelle to discover how she continues to train her mind and body.

NMF: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority?

MB: I have always been an athlete, but never really focused on the fitness/health side of it till I was 35yrs old.  I found myself in an unfulfilling relationship and wasn’t doing all my normal activities.  I felt frumpy as I had gained extra weight for the first time in my life.  I decided I needed to resolve that and hired my first personal trainer.  From there it took off like wild fire and here I am 10 years later an IFBB Figure Pro.  Who knew!

NMF: What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?

MB: Since I am a competitor my diet is pretty regimented.  On my off times I go to greek yogurt, almonds, rice cakes, and of course the oh so tasty almond butter.  These are healthy and super tasty treats that are easy to have with you on the go.

NMF: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?

MB: This is a key point to my training.  I love this motto of yours.  It ties in directly with mine, “It’s Possible”.  I am here to motivate others to inspire them to go after their dreams.  I like to lead by example.  I work with writing journals that include a gratitude list, intentions list, as well as a forgiveness list.  My other go to is meditation.  Keeping grounded is so important with all of the drama in the world.  Taking time out to breathe and focus internally.

NMF: How do you change your body?  What are your fitness favorites?

MB: Changing my body is a constant must for me.  I am always working toward creating the best me possible.  I change up my workouts frequently keeping the body unsure of what's happening next.  I also keep my diet clean on and off season, but its important to change it up as well.  Just like anything  else the body adapts and needs to be reminded to work by switching up your nutrition plan frequently.
