Lauren Sesselmann is the founder and creator of Fit as Pro and that is exactly how her DVD workouts make you feel!   Sesselamann was drafted into the Women's Professional Soccer League in 2009 and later joined the Canadian team in 2011.  Lauren is currently preparing for the FIFA Women's World Cup that takes place in Canada in 2015.   In addition to being a well-known athlete Lauren is also the brand ambassador for ReXist360 Training Bands, this fitness accessory helps to increase the intensity of her training and enhance her results as she prepares for the FIFA Women's World Cup!

Needless to say she knows what it takes to train her mind and body in order to achieve fitness goals. I loved interviewing Lauren since we share a lot of the same beliefs ( I highlighted my favorite parts). Continue reading this weeks fitness files to learn more about Lauren and what drives her!

NMF: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority?

LS: Growing up I was always an active kid. A staple in the all boys’ neighborhood activities, I could run and fight with the best of them. When I was in high school I started learning more and more the importance of being fit and living a healthy lifestyle, but I have to say once I made Canada’s National Soccer Team I stepped it up a notch. I have been very lucky to work with the best in the world when it comes to training the mind, body and soul right. We have a nutritionist that works with us daily making sure we are fueling our bodies correctly with the right amount of carbs, proteins, fats and sugars. We have a top of the line trainer that is always making sure we are focusing on all aspects of the body to perform our best on the field. At my age I am much more aware of what I put in my body and how I train it and have been researching and reading more and more now that I have my own fitness business.

NMF: What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?

LS: I love water/coconut water and chocolate milk. We sweat so much and are constantly training and in different temperatures so water is imperative for a better recovery. I also love chocolate milk for after training and games. It has the right amount of carbs, proteins, fats and sugars that I need to restore what I lost. Some of my favorite snacks are veggies and hummus, fruit or a rice cake with almond butter, green smoothies, high fiber cereal, almonds and low fat cheese (being from Wisconsin, that’s the cheesehead in me).

NMF: At Nadia Murdock Fit our motto is “Train Your Mind, Change Your Body” so we must ask: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?

LS: I think the mental component is the biggest in living a healthy lifestyle. I do a lot of meditation…Ive found a few programs on iTunes that are very soothing. I listen to them before games. They help me relax and focus in on the task at hand. I also love positive quotes. I love reading sport autobiographies and reading quotes that get me pumped up for the day and ready to take on anything. I believe in starting each day with a positive mindset..it gives you the energy, strength, and faith to push yourself through our busy schedules and grueling workouts. I think it's important to find something that motivates you and that also pushes you through. For me it’s my family, teammates, and fans. When I receive letters from fans that say I am their inspiration and that they want to be like me someday..it pushes me through and lets me know that I'm working hard for a purpose. Also getting a taste of a medal at the Olympics makes me want to win a gold so badly, so waking up every morning having a goal is great motivation.

NMF: How do you change your body?  What are your fitness favorites?

LS: I think the biggest thing to do to change your body is to first set goals for yourself…whether they be big or small. Remember that everyone is different and everyone has to go at their own pace. Big changes will not happen overnight, have patience and strong work ethic to reach your goals and become a little bit better everyday. Incorporating a healthy nutrition plan in conjunction with daily exercise will help your body change. I don't believe in diets and I don't believe in limiting yourself from things you love. I do believe in moderation and I do believe that if you want it bad enough you will make the changes
Something I love to do is change up my workouts because I get bored easily. I love to go for long walks with my dogs, go hiking with my parents, I love kickboxing because it is a great stress relief, I love to swim, spin, Pilates, pick up game of basketball…find what you love and incorporate it into your workouts!
