Fitness Files: Dr. Emily

Earlier this summer I stopped by the SOLS pop-up store in New York to workout with Dr. Emily as she promoted her new book Barefoot Strong: Unlock the Secrets to Movement LongevityHow often do we truly concentrate on workouts that help promote healthy feet? Not too often!  Needless to say the workout was amazing and fun too! After the workout I had the chance  to interview  Dr. Emily for my Periscope channel and the  Fitness Files series.   Continue reading to learn more about Dr. Emily and her passion for movement.

NMFIT: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority?

Dr. Emily: Movement - not necessarily fitness - has always been an integral part of my life. From the age of 6 to 18 I was a competitive gymnast which I think shaped how I look at movement today.  After I left gymnastics I struggled a little bit to find what could fill that void. At age 21 I transitioned into fitness and began teaching group exercise and personal training. Over the past 14 years I would hit peaks and valleys with my passion for fitness and movement but always found a new technique or education to re-spark my passion. I'd say my current passion is bodyweight movement, barefoot training and aerials (silks).

NMFIT: What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?

Dr. Emily: Watermelon and watermelon water are some of my favorite pre-workout snacks. These two snacks are packed with L-citrulline which gives you the "pump" or energy to workout. Another favorite of mine is kombucha and chia seed drinks. I drink these and I instantly feel awake and focused.

NMFIT: At Nadia Murdock Fit our motto is "Train Your Mind, Change Your Body" so we must ask: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?

Dr. Emily: I am a huge proponent of the power of the mind for mood and motivation. Every single day since August 1, 2014 I start my day with motivational talks on YouTube. My favorite motivational speakers are Tony Robbins and Greg Plitt. They both take a very realist approach to life and emphasize action - not just positive words. A book that has completely changed my life is The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. I think this should be a must-read for everyone.

NMFIT: How do you change your body? What are your fitness favorites?

Dr. Emily: My favorite way to challenge my body is with aerial silks. I've been doing aerials for almost a year now and it has re-ignited a passion for movement like no other.   I feel beautiful and strong when I do silks - and to see the skill development since I began is fascinating. Other than that I love yoga, BARE® (of course), paddleboarding - pretty much anything that uses bodyweight.
