Why I Only Drink Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice

Earlier last year I attended a small gathering with the founders of the Blue Print Cleanse. During our discussion I learned more about the process of orange juice sold in our everyday grocery story.  At the time I had already started to step away from store bought orange juice mainly due to added sugars but I liked to keep it in the house for guests in case I ever needed to make a quick cocktail.  I was horrified when the founders Zoe Sakoutis and Erica Huss said that what we as consumers know to be freshly squeezed sits in vat for extended periods of time in a storage unit.  Courtesy of Gizmodo here is the sad but true process when it comes to orange juice:

Once the juice is squeezed and stored in gigantic vats, they start removing oxygen. Why? Because removing oxygen from the juice allows the liquid to keep for up to a year without spoiling. But! Removing that oxygen also removes the natural flavors of oranges. Yeah, it's all backwards. So in order to have OJ actually taste like oranges, drink companies hire flavor and fragrance companies, the same ones that make perfumes for Dior, to create these "flavor packs" to make juice taste like, well, juice again.

Having fresh squeezed orange juice sounds like a daunting additional task but it really isn't that bad!  Each week I buy a bag of oranges from my local farmers market, every morning I slice an orange in half and squeeze away!  Oranges are perfect for infusing water or for a mid-day snack.

Here is where you can snag a simple and inexpensive juicer!
