St. Patrick’s Day the Healthy Way: Food Makeover from Green Beer to Shepard’s Pie

It’s hard to think of March without thinking of St. Patrick’s Day!  That also means celebrations that include a parade and a day and night of drinking and eating traditional Irish food fare (not always the healthiest).  I am sharing lightened up tips for holiday favorites that will keep the party goers happy and without feeling the guilt tomorrow.

Green Beer: You are looking at least 125 calories per serving when it comes to beer, lighten it up but keep it green with other fun cocktails.  There are some beers that are only 64 calories; you just have to know what you are looking for!  I would suggest avoiding beers like Guinness Extra Stout that is 176 calories, 14 g of carbohydrates per serving.  Instead opt for a lighter beer like Beck's Premier Light or Miller Genuine Draft that are both only 64 calories.

Shepherd’s Pie: One cup of shepherd’s pie is 272 calories but let’s face it you never eat just one cup!  This dish is easy to recreate with half the calories, with simple swaps like cauliflower instead of potatoes and ground chicken instead of beef.

Corn Beef & Cabbage:  This dish is pretty much already healthy thanks to the delicious side of cabbage.  How it’s prepared is key, from mouthwatering spices to creative alternative sides there is always room for improvement.
