Make Your Plate Portion Control Friendly
It’s what you eat and more importantly, how much you eat that can pack on the pounds. An important concept in maintaining a healthy weight is portion control. Understanding something as simple as portion sizes for the foods you eat can help slim your waistline and effect your overall health.
Eating out is one of the biggest dietary pitfalls. Restaurants serve overloaded plates that can be a diet disaster. Research shows that people unintentionally consume more calories when faced with larger portions. Knowing your limits will help you overcome consuming excess calories.
Remembering the portion sizes by a particular food or object is much easier then taking a measuring cup with you everywhere you go! Below is a guideline of visual representations to help you when eating out & cooking at home!
- Pasta is about the size of one scoop of ice cream
- Meat, fish or poultry is about the size of a deck of cards
- Vegetables and Fruit is the size of your fist
- Snacks (pretzels, chips, etc) the size of a handful
- Oils are the size of a golf ball
- Bagel is the size of a hockey puck
- Cheese is the size of a pair of dice
