How To Stay Healthy Working From Home

As more and more people are working from home now, they are realizing the challenges which come with it. While they might be saving money on expensive lunches and takeaway coffees, they also have access to their own cupboards all day long, can cook anything they like, and without a commute or walk to work, many people are staying in bed longer and getting less exercise.

It’s important to adapt to this new way of working and to make sure it works for you. Now the novelty has worn off slightly; it’s time to settle in, to accept that this is the future and not a temporary solution but a way of life. Even if not full-time, working from home will play a huge part in the workforces of the future, so how can you make sure you stay healthy while doing it?

Have a morning routine

Although it is a luxury to be able to stay in bed longer and not have to commute, it’s also important that you don’t simply roll out of bed five minutes before you start work. It’s important to keep a morning routine just like you had before. This could be having a shower, breakfast, a coffee, or walking the dog. Your routine may be slightly different now as you might not want to put on a full face of makeup, and while you might not want to put on your smart business attire, it is still important to get dressed out of your pyjamas.

Have a dedicated workspace

As mentioned, it’s no good just rolling out of bed five minutes before you start work, and it’s even worse to grab your laptop and start work while you’re still in bed. If you have a room in your house that you can turn into an office, then go for it; if not, then create a space that is a dedicated workspace and can act as your office. It could be your kitchen table, a corner of a room, or a desk under the stairs. Try to make it as comfortable as you can and use a posture corrector app to get the furniture right, so you’re not slumped over all day and use notice boards and files to keep organized.

Take an actual lunch break

It can be tempting to sit in front of your computer and eat your lunch or to carry on working and not take a lunch break. If there’s nowhere to go but your kitchen, it might not feel like a real break. But it is important for your mental health that you do have an actual break. As you would if you were going out to an office, prepare your food in advance so that you’re less likely to overeat, and it saves you time during your lunch break. You could either eat it in another room or take it outside and go for a walk and eat your lunch on a park bench. It’s good to get outside to get some fresh air, and Vitamin D as these are great for your mental health and productivity

Keep healthy snacks on hand

To stop yourself from raiding your cupboards and snacking on unhealthy foods all day, make sure you have stocked up on healthy snacks and if you are doing a meal plan, then factor them in.  Also, remember to drink plenty of water.
