healthy hoohoo
How much do you know about your everyday female hygiene products? Most of the products we use each month have traces of cancer causing agents. According to Groovy Green Livin:
Our friends at Women’s Voices for the Earth just discovered that Always pads release styrene, a known cancer causing chemical, along with chloroform, acetone, chloromethane, and other toxic chemicals listed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Toxicology Program, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, and the State of California Environmental Protection Agency as carcinogens, and reproductive and developmental toxins.
Both scented and unscented Always Ultra Thin pads were tested, as well as scented and unscented Always Infinity.
With a heightened awareness of what ingredients are in our regular products from food to personal hygiene I wanted to interview a brand that is making a difference! I was introduced to healthy hoohoo while attending the Healthy Brands Showcase. Continue reading my interview below with Natalie Dent to learn more about the product and why you should consider using it!
NMFIT: Why did you feel the need to create healthy hoohoo?
HH: After a revealing trip to the gynecologist, I realized that my collection of well-intentioned cleansers and wipes were actually wiping away the goodness Mother Nature put there to keep things in harmony. After scouring the Internet for more information than I ever intended upon finding, a light bulb went off in my head. “Why not create something organic, natural and gentle that brings all things flora back into balance, but with a fun, empowering vibe? Surprisingly, I discovered that most mass-marketed intimate cleansers for women were laden with harsh detergents, dyes, parabens and synthetic fragrances. These chemicals upset a woman’s natural balance and open the door for unwanted bacteria and other problems.
And so…healthy hoohoo was born. Like the inventor who first cut the feet off a pair of panty hose, a great product arises from a women’s determination to make things better, and in this case, healthier for all things “hoohoo.”
NMFIT: How long did it take to put together the perfect paraben free product?
HH: Roughly two years. Knowing that organic chemistry brought me to my knees in college, I did not try my hand at creating homemade hoohoo concoctions. Instead I acknowledged my weakness and reached out to an OBGYN, Naturopathic Doctor and one of the top natural product formulation chemists who listened to what I wanted and more importantly, what I did NOT want in my products.
Hundreds of tiny bottles invaded my home as our chemist sent sample after sample for our ‘look-lather-smell-feel-and-rinse-ability tests.’” Round after round, I tweaked the ingredients, zeroing in on healthy hoohoo’s winning formula. Once I got it down to three versions that I thought might work, I prepared sample-size bottles and handed them over to my “hoohoo mavens.” A smart, talented and caring group of women, the mavens were the “gal pals” that are referenced on the back of each product….as in, “tested on gal pals not animals.” The hoohoo mavens provided insightful feedback and most of all, precious testing grounds for each sample.
NMFIT: What are some harmful ingredients often found in women's personal hygiene products?
HH: We know products like douches, washes, wipes and sprays can contain formaldehyde releasers like quaternium-15, DMDM Hydantion, diazolidinyl urea and other nasty chemicals. To learn more visit my Women's Voices for the Earth, they are very knowledge about this subject matter.
NMFIT: What is the connection between chronic disease (cancer in particular) and a few of these harmful products?
HH: Parabens and Phthalates (chemicals found in the lovely all-encompassing word “fragrance” found on many labels) have both been considered as possible carcinogens. *Further info: Click Here
NMFIT: How have women received healthy hoohoo?
HH: I cannot tell you how proud and happy it makes me to hear from a woman that comments, “I just don’t think about it anymore,” or “I finally feel balanced.” Here’s one that just came in a few days ago and it totally made my day:
“After going through breast cancer and ovarian cancer treatment the last 4 years my nurse suggested your products. Wow, they did what other creams and antibiotics could not. I have been using your products ever since then and share with all my girlfriends. I wish you would develop a lubricant similar to the hoohoo wash and wipes that does not have all the crap in it that causes problems.” - Kristy, a loyal customer
