Happy International Yoga Day!
Happy International Yoga Day! In December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21st as the International Day of Yoga. Yoga is a 5,000-year-old physical, mental and spiritual practice that aims to transform both body and mind. Yoga is something that I have been trying to add to my workouts regularly. I can personally say that since doing so I always feel refreshed, positive and relaxed after each yoga session.
I reached out to seasoned Yoga professional Meaghan Kennedy Townsend the star of the Element: Targeted Toning Yoga DVD and asked her a few questions that might help get beginners make yoga a core portion of their workout routine.
NMF: Can yoga help improve other aspects of your life? For example, sleep or metabolism?
Meaghan Kennedy Townsend (MKT): The most important part of yoga is breath management and it has the greatest impact on our lives by giving us the best tool to alleviate stress and perform under pressure. Stress is linked to a myriad of degenerative diseases so having a means of being as productive as possible without the side-effects is transformative. Along with providing us a means of living at a higher state, yoga also give us a low-impact physical practice to burn calories, strengthen muscles, and enhance our balance and flexibility. One of the best parts of yoga is that it can be done for an entire lifetime.
NMF: What is the best yoga practice for beginners?
MKT: The best practice for beginners is the one that the student does regularly with an excellent teacher who modifies the curriculum to the student’s needs. Any system with a one-side-fits-all approach will have a higher chance of injury for the new student. We always want to work with excellent teachers who help us achieve our goals in a safe environment.
NMF: How has yoga changed your life?
MKT: Through yoga I have built a strong network of like-minded friends, overcome emotional obstacles and met my husband.
