Guest Blog Post: Is Sugar Free a Sure Thing?
Sugar free and fat free are a huge hype these days when it comes to staying thin. But is this actually more healthy for you?
Sugar-free products must be below 0.5 grams of sugar, however, most companies usually just add extra carbohydrates and calories to compensate for taste. These products contain sugar-alcohols which are definitely lower (about half the calories) then the regular products.
A package labeled sugar-free is usually made with artificial sweeteners and the real sugar is left behind. Artificial sweeteners are ‘chemically manufactured molecules.’ These are made in labs to replace our real sugar to cut calories. They may cut some calories, but in reality, they cause more health problems. Consuming excess artificial sweeteners is known to increase the risk of type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Most artificial sweeteners are actually 100-1000x sweeter then regular sugar, so it’s very diluted with chemicals.
In a nutshell, sugar-free products are not healthier for you. They may cut some calories in the beginning, but daily consumption will increase health issues considerably. If you want to indulge once in a while, I suggest having the real thing.
