Fitness Files: Mpowher Founders

Mpowher

Mpowher

Mpowher is a company founded by women, for women, to empower women. When two former college athletes  Laurel Kasel and Hanna Bowden wanted to marry their athletic passion into a business effort that would provide future female generations more opportunity than the one that proceeded it. The mission is to show love for fitness and style, while building a community that inspires, motivates and empowers women at the same time. Below you will find two Fitness Files interviews for each founder. Continue reading to learn more about Mpowher and how you can also help to give back.

NMF: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority?

LK: Fitness has always been a major player in my life. I was extremely active as a child, whether it was running around playing with friends or participating in as many sports as possible, I was always moving. As I grew up, I was focused on practicing and competing at a high level for collegiate athletics. The importance of focus, work ethic and discipline I learned though sport has transcended into my everyday life. Fitness and movement is a huge part of who I am today. It helps me relive stress, clear my head and keep focus for everyday life. Whether it is a fitness class, a hike, or a run, it helps me stay productive and attentive every day.

NMF: What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?

LK: Of course! We all have our go-to snacks and drinks that help with a little energy boost throughout the day. My go-to snack for a little pick me up, are carrots, nuts, or yogurt and granola (I make my own granola). All of these snacks are healthy, easy to carry around, can be eaten quickly, and give you a little energy boost when you need it. In regards to drinks, I stick to good old H2O. Being hydrated also keeps me alert and to spice it up I use a lemon or lime.

NMF: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?

LK: This might sound crazy but when you are working…make sure you TAKE BREAKS!! This will keep you alert and focused while you work, making you so very productive. I will work about an hour or two and then take a 5 to 10-minute break. It keeps your mind fresh and active and your productivity skyrockets when you are working. Taking quick mental breaks throughout the day helps me get so much done.

NMF: How do you change your body?  What are your fitness favorites?

LK: The best way to change your body is to make sure you are working out in ways that you enjoy. You have to like the workout and look forward to it! If you despise it, then you won't do it, and nothing is going to change. You have to commit to a change using workouts that you enjoy and look forward to. Don't forget to eat healthy as well!!

I don’t like running, but for a while, that was the way I worked out to get my cardio in. I started despising working out which had always been a great release for me. Then I smartened up and started to get my cardio using workouts I enjoyed. For me that is HITT, playing rec sports and sprints + lifting.

NMF: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority?

HB: As far as I can remember fitness has always been a part of my life. If I could give a catalyst it would be signing up to play pee wee basketball when I was in the second grade. I picked up a ball and have been moving ever since. Little did I know at the time how much an active lifestyle and fitness would change my life. I was able to attend college on a basketball scholarship, where I was able to get my bachelor’s degree (I would probably never have gone to college without it, very glad I did). Even now after I have been done playing for a few years I can’t stop working out and being active, and I don’t think I ever will be.

NMF: What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?

HB: I drink a ton of water! My business partner Laurel has given me the nickname of camel because of how much water I drink. For my snacks I love to eat fruits and try my best to put some veggies in the mix as well.

NMF: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?

HB: I really enjoy reading and learning from others. I try to find books that are not only fun to read but also give me a mental boost and move me in the direction to be a better person. Currently reading Daring Greatly, I really recommend this book. Brene Brown really makes you think and make some things clear on why our minds work the way they do.

NMF: How do you change your body?  What are your fitness favorites?

HB: Changing up what I’m doing, this is huge for keeping me interested in what I’m doing. If we continue to do the same thing every day not only does our mind get sick of it our body does as well. By switching up mine routine it keeps my mind and body guessing, and it’s also really fun! Getting outside to be active is always something that keeps me motivated.
