NMFIT: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority?
Marxel Leobez (ML): My personal journey to where fitness became a priority and a passionate focus in my life came slowly but surely. But most importantly it happened when I changed my mind set from fitness being a competitive hobby to a lifestyle that I love and appreciate.
Fitness became a lifestyle for me shortly after I took my first Yoga class in college. The idea that there was importance in maintaining a mind body connection led me to educate myself and align aspects of wellness to my physical activities. This led me to cultivate a true sustainable fitness practice that went deeper then just looking good but feeling good as well.
I guess you can say yoga was the catalyst for me really embracing a healthy active lifestyle as fitness practitioner and fanatic. The point which fitness became a priority in my life was when I realized I wanted to share with people the importance of joy of a healthy personal fitness practice.
NMFIT: What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?
ML: I teach and train a lot of people around LA on top of having my own lifting routine. So I always have to pack some quick healthy sources of protein , complex carbs and other essentials for my long days.
My favorite quick healthy snack is Grilled Asparagus wrapped in Turkey breast w a side of spicy chicken quinoa salad. To avoid high sodium content I get my turkey breast from a local deli on the west side. This little food combo is packed with nutrients and is a great pick me when when I am on the go in LA.
For Hydration I usually stick to water that I has been steeped with some cucumbers, mint and lemon for an extra kick.
NMFIT: At Nadia Murdock Fit our motto is “Train Your Mind, Change Your Body” so we must ask: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?
ML: Its very true when there is no mind body alignment it is hard to stay consistently motivated within your fitness practice. Yoga does the trick for me. But when I teach so much yoga it can be a challenge to fit in a time to just zen out and take for the sake of taking.
I like to diversify my mind body regime. I do this often by taking a hike , connecting with the wilderness getting away from the hustle of LA . I usually top off my hike with some yoga and meditation at the end of the hike. I do this about twice a week. This really helps me clear my mind, visualize my goals , prioritize and train my mind and body to stay motivated together.
NMFIT: How do you change your body? What are your fitness favorites?
ML: As a male with a mesomorph body that can plateau and/or can change very quickly I always have to stay ahead of the curve to keep my body guessing.
I do this by diversifying my work out routine and trying something new things every 3-4 weeks via gym, or group fitness classes to both educate me and also keep my body lean and sculpted.
My fitness favorites are Orangetheory Fitness in Brentwood. The metabolic burn I get from their style of HIT training classes is incredible. I top it off by integrating some very technical 6 pack abdominal work that that requires resistance bands and thera balls.
The metabolic burn I get from Orange Theory helps me prep to create visible abs with my own Power Xculpt Technique. Collaborations are amazing and is unforgiving if I have to much of a “ cheat meal.” It also means that my body can easily plateau and gets used to a specific routine. For starters I always like to diversify my workout routines to keep my body guessing. I love Group Fitness class My body always needs some great clean sources of protein , complex carbs and other fuel for my long days.
