NMF: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority?

MU: I was lucky enough to be brought up with a dancing school in our garage, where my mother and the six kids taught dancing to 200 students between the ages of two and 80, including the nuns from the Catholic school next door. Having grown up with a love and appreciation of movement, it has served me well throughout my entire life, even when I weighed 54 pounds more than I do right now.

NMF: What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?

MU: I always drink water. I’m a big believer in hydration. I also love raw nuts, fruits, organic green bars, and wet foods (veggies and greens with a high water content) at every meal, and not just as a snack. Every day during the afternoon slump at around 4 p.m., I try to have a big green salad, usually with arugula, spinach, kale, avocado, red onion and a little bit of balsamic vinegar and olive oil. It sets me up for the rest of the day.

NMF: At Nadia Murdock Fit, our motto is “Train Your Mind, Change Your Body” so we must ask: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?

MU: As I am always telling people on my radio show and on Marilu.com: “You are in the laboratory of your life and every day is an experiment. Some experiments work and some others don’t. You are just collecting data, and that’s why you shouldn’t get down on yourself or think of anything you do as cheating; you are merely gathering information. You must also learn to love the food that loves you, because let’s face it, you usually know what loves you and what doesn’t.” This keeps me and others motivated, because every day is a fresh start.

NMF: What are your fitness favorites?

MU: I discovered Pilates on January 4th of 1979, so I’ve been doing it a very long time. I grew up as a dancer, so I to love dance. I also love to race walk. It’s important for people to try different things and not hold back. We all need to rediscover that sweaty little kid we all used to be who loved to go out and play. I believe everyone should break a sweat every day for at least 10 minutes, because you’ll work up to the sweat and come down from the sweat, so that comes out to about 30 minutes of exercise.  And by everyone, I also mean the 1 in 3 women with sensitive bladders! Women need to know that the things that happen to our bodies as we age shouldn’t make us self-conscious and keep us from staying active. Women need to use the right protection, like new Always Discreet liners, pads and underwear, so they have the confidence to keep moving and exercising.

NMF: How do you change your body?

MU: I really changed my body when I learned how to walk properly. A trainer once pointed out to me that my posture was off. I had to learn how to articulate my feet when they hit the ground so that that all of my body was engaged with every step. As a result, I improved my posture, my walk, how I sit and how I exercise, and it changed my whole body for the better.
