Fitness Files: Lisa Binderow, Founder of nicepipes Apparel

Lisa Binderow, is the founder of nicepipes apparel, her premiere line of performance fabric athletic leg & arm warmers are catching the attention of yoga instructors and fitness lovers everywhere. I connected to Lisa instantly when I found out her love for fitness as a mom-to-be (I just had my son December 2016). Lisa started nicepipes apparel two years ago, when she was inspired to create a women’s activewear line specializing in performance leg and arm warmers that would work for those serious about their workouts.

The idea behind it?  Teaching yoga & running around the city in cold weather required seriously warm layers; her cropped yoga pants left her shins bare and the wool or acrylic legwarmers of the past just weren’t up to the task.  Lisa thought that if she had this problem, others must too and wanted to find a solution. So, she designed nicepipes – leg & arm warmers made from the same, awesome, sweat-wicking fabric as yoga pants so that she could have the option of wearing them before, during, and after class.  As soon as she wore her pipes around the studios her students and fellow instructors wanted their own pair of pipes…and so a business was born. NMF: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority?

Lisa Binderow (LB): Growing up, I was always into sports and gymnastics, though it definitely fell off majorly in the college years.  I took my first yoga class at 22 and the practice really resonated with me.  Throughout my 20s I became more and more dedicated to yoga, especially after I lost my dad to cancer.  I ended up doing over 500 hours of yoga teacher training and have taught yoga and barre at the YogaWorks studios in NY.   Today I am almost 6 months pregnant so there is a lot of stretching, breathing, and definitely brisk walks on nice days to get my heart rate up!

NMF: What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?
LB: Apple with sunflower seed butter, I'm addicted.  I am allergic to nuts so I have to avoid the almond and peanut butters, but sunflower seed butter is so delicious.  Also if I know I need to get more veggies in that day I always reach for a green juice or smoothie from the Juice Press.  The Rainforest with extra spinach and ginger is my fav!

NMF: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?
LB: I am diligent about stretching every morning for 10 mins, meditating for 10 mins, and then stretching every night before I go to sleep.  Just squeezing 5-10 mins of breathing and stretching into start and end your day can do wonders for your energy, sleep quality, and peace of mind.

NMF: How do you change your body?  What are your fitness favorites?
LB: SLT! I really think their workout can change your body, especially if you do it mindfully.  It made a huge difference in my glutes and hamstrings which have always been a weak spot for me.  It's a tough class but I love it.
