NMF: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority?

GP: Fitness has been a major part of my life, since a young age. Both my father and grandfather had careers as professional athletes, so you could say I was born with a ball and a bat in hand. Fitness and training, specifically, became a part of my life when my father challenged me one summer to put as much dedication towards school work and reading as playing baseball. His terms: read a half hour every day, then play ball. If I didn’t read, punishment was swim 200 laps, do 400 pushups, and 500 situps before I could play ball. Being the defiant kid I was, I did the workout for about a week and a half before my dad upped the ante to 500 laps, 1,000 pushups, and 1,000 situps. As I continued my workouts, I started noticing improved performance on the field, which really drove my interest in fitness and training. I realized, the more you train, the better you perform, and became a student of fitness as well as a student of the game.

NMF : What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?

GP : For me personally, I don’t typically snack. That said, my diet is high protein, low carbs, with a “cave man” or paleo influence – I only shop on the perimeter of the supermarket and focus on lean proteins, vegetables, etc. Whey protein shakes are always a go-to, in addition to chicken breast and veggies.

Overall, my approach to food is that you eat to fuel the body, not to satisfy appetite. In terms of keeping on the straight and narrow diet/nutrition plan, I tend to focus more on the emotional high of staying on track when you make better food decisions, and eat for how I feel after the meal. My goal is to erase the power food has on you, and loop past the temporary satisfaction.

NMF : At Nadia Murdock Fit our motto is “Train Your Mind, Change Your Body” so we must ask: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?

GP : Fitness is all a mindset that eventually becomes a religion. Failure is your friend, because when you get comfortable your true potential is never reached. The biggest mental challenge people tend to face is to know what you’re up against, know what the enemy is, know results are going to take time, and be prepared for that. It will be hard at first, but if you have the correct perspective and focus on long term gains and accomplishments, fitness will become a love.

NMF : How do you change your body?  What are your fitness favorites?

GP : Always challenge your body and yourself in whatever exercise you’re doing. When you feel your muscles burning and you feel the pain, you should get excited because now you’re actually touching on change. Pushing past this is how you make gains – always change up your workouts and always push to your current limit and a little beyond.
