Fitness Files: BurnThis App Founders

When I was asked to be interviewed and join the BurnThis App family as a fit influencer I couldn't be happier. BurnThis combines cutting-edge photo sharing tools with an active social network to create a fitness super community that inspires and pushes you to be your healthiest, most fit self. 

They provide you with social tools that will proactively motivate you to live a healthy lifestyle through the support and encouragement of others who are going through the same challenges and experiences. NMF: Has fitness always been a major part of your life or was there a catalyst/point in your life when you made it more of a focus and priority? (this also includes how their passion for fitness inspired them to build BurnThis)

AKM: I’ve always had a deep love for sports and fitness and it’s been an integral part of my life since I was a child.  A couple of years ago, I was unable to exercise at all for six months due to some health issues.  Not having full control over my own body had a deep mental and emotional impact on me.  Once I was able to exercise again, I looked at every experience with newfound perspective and appreciation.  During this time, I became much more adventurous, trying all different types of workouts, going on fitness retreats, and connecting with complete strangers as we bonded over a shared interest.  This newfound fusion of fitness, adventure and friendship was the driving force for me.

MJ: For me fitness has always been about community. My very first experiences with fitness were as a young kid playing sports and I was an avid athlete throughout high school. When I got to college I could no longer play sports because I went to a Division A school. I really missed the community I felt when working out but could not find anything to replace it at that time. Cut to six years ago when I discovered boutique fitness. The concept of being in a class with other people (women primarily) who motivated and inspired me to work out hard and with whom I could socialize with after was super appealing to me because I felt like I was part of a fitness community again. Anna and I were drawn together through our mutual love of boutique fitness and a shared passion for fitness and community. We knew we needed to build a social fitness appthat connected people authentically to be inspired and motivated by fitness. We started with a class booking platform that allowed people to see what classes their friends went to but soon began to realize that the platform needed to be more social – people on the app wanted to have a real voice so they could actually tell other members about their fitness journeys and get inspired and motivated by others rather than just speaking through booking classes. That’s when the real BurnThis was born … 

NMF: What are a few of your go-to healthy snacks/drinks that help keep you on the straight and narrow?

AKM & MJ: We are both obsessed with Good Bites (goodbites.co) - they are raw, organic, gluten-free non GMO super food snacks that include chocolate truffles, blondies, and date cookies. They are the perfect post-workout treat because they hit the sweet tooth craving but still fall into the clean eating category. 

NMF: At Nadia Murdock Fit our motto is “Train Your Mind, Change Your Body” so we must ask: How do you train your mind and stay motivated?

AKM & MJWe check the BurnThis app! There is so much inspiration and motivation coming through  - literally every minute - with the posts our members are sharing.  From workout selfies to recipes to motivational quotes, there is so much there to keep you on track.  We find ourselves making healthier choices and challenging ourselves in new ways to try out workouts, meals, and products we see on the app. The power of community has a huge effect on building and sustaining a healthy mindset.

NMF: How do you change your body?  What are your fitness favorites

AKM & MJ: We have tried it all! Lately, we've actually been pretty big gym rats, with almost-daily trips to our local Equinox.  We'll mix up cardio with weight or circuit training and sometimes take group classes.  Outside of the gym, our personal favorites are Pilates at Pilates Platinum and Circuit Training at Alpha Venice (Monica), and Hot Yoga at Hot 8 or Barre at Pure Barre (Anna). We also both love SoulCycle.
